Plotting Waveforms of an Event from different stations

Hello!

I am trying to plot the waveforms for a large magnitude earthquake using stations that are far away in hopes to identify some phases. I am able to plot wave forms without issue using stations that are close by to the earthquake, but I can’t seem to get it to work for stations that are far away (More than 40 degrees from the event). The issue I am running into is that I can only extract waveform data from the BHZ component, but not the BHN or BHE components. I am ultimately going to end up rotating BHN and BHE to BHT and BHR, but of course I can’t do that without getting the waveforms. When I try to get BHN/E data, I get the output message:

‘No data available for request.’

What might be the cause of this? Is the earthquake not registered in these components because the stations are too far away? I appreciate any help that can be provided! Note that I can also obtain waveform information for BH1 and BH2 but I would much rather have the BHN and BHE components!

Daniel

Hi Daniel

Perhaps if you give some more information on how and from where you have tried to retrieve the data will make it possible for someone to give you some hints, simply posting the output message won’t cut it.

That said, the fact that BH1 and BH2 components are available (in addition to BHZ) indicates that there’s no BHE and BHN component, you’d better get your hands on the meta data of the instrument to know the orientation of the components.

Hello,

I believe I have actually figured it out! I was trying to observe the large earthquake that happened in Mexico in 2017 at various stations in the US and Canada, and when I would try to obtain station information it would show that they had BHZ, BHN and BHE components as well as BHZ BH1 and BH2 components. However, upon looking at the collection time ranges, the BHE and BHN components were not collected during the time of the earthquake, but were collected on BH1 and BH2. After using the argument starttime I was able to find stations during the timeframe that had BHE, BHZ, and BHN components with data for that earthquake! I appreciate the help!
