does anyone have any experience downloading data from the USGS server?
I keep getting the following message:

Presuming you are trying to connect to the earthquake.usgs.gov server, they only offer a fdsnws-event service. The error message you are receiving is likely due to the non-existence of an fdsnws-dataselect service. A list of available FDSN web service endpoints is here:
http://www.fdsn.org/webservices/datacenters/
Most of the publicly-accessible data that you might expect to get from USGS, primarily the Global Seismographic Network (GSN) and US regional networks, is available from the IRIS DMC.
